Ain’t I a Man Too? Black Men, Identity, and the Myths of Masculinity
A powerful new book by Dr. Nick exploring Black masculinity, identity, healing, and the myths men have inherited about what it means to be a man.
This is not a rejection of masculinity.
It is a call to claim it.

Counselor | Educator | Author | Researcher | Framework Developer
Welcome, and thank you for visiting.
My work is rooted in a simple belief: people are best understood within the context of their culture, experiences, relationships, faith, and communities.
As a counselor, educator, author, and researcher, I have spent my career exploring questions related to identity, masculinity, mental health, spirituality, addiction recovery, and human development. Through scholarship, professional practice, and community engagement, I seek to foster meaningful dialogue that encourages understanding, growth, and connection.
I do not consider myself an expert with all the answers. Instead, I view myself as a thought leader and lifelong learner committed to asking meaningful questions, challenging assumptions, and creating opportunities for deeper understanding. My goal is not to tell people what to think. My goal is to help people think more deeply about themselves, their experiences, and the world around them.
Whether you are a student, clinician, researcher, educator, community leader, or someone seeking personal growth, I hope you find ideas here that encourage reflection, dialogue, and discovery.
My Work
My scholarship and professional interests focus on the intersection of masculinity, culture, faith, mental health, addiction recovery, and human development. While these areas may seem distinct, they are connected by a common theme:
Understanding how lived experiences shape identity, well-being, and personal growth.
Through books, research, professional leadership, and community engagement, I strive to make complex ideas accessible and relevant while creating space for meaningful conversations that bridge differences and promote understanding.
The Culturally Aligned Masculinity Model (CAMM)
One of my primary scholarly contributions is the development of the Culturally Aligned Masculinity Model (CAMM).
The model emerged from a desire to better understand how culture, community, identity, values, and lived experiences influence masculine expression. Too often, conversations about masculinity assume there is a single definition of what it means to be a man. CAMM challenges that assumption by recognizing the diversity of masculine experiences across cultures and communities.
Rather than prescribing what masculinity should look like, the model encourages exploration of how individuals develop and express masculinity within their unique cultural and social contexts.
CAMM provides a framework for dialogue, understanding, research, education, and personal reflection.
The Culturally Aligned Masculinity Assessment (CAMA)
The Culturally Aligned Masculinity Assessment (CAMA) was developed as a companion to the Culturally Aligned Masculinity Model.
The assessment was designed to help researchers, educators, counselors, and organizations explore culturally aligned masculine identity through a structured framework grounded in cultural context and lived experience.
As the assessment continues to evolve, it represents an important step toward expanding conversations about masculinity beyond traditional one-size-fits-all perspectives.

Thoughts, Reflections, and Conversations
Through Dr. Nick Speaks, I share reflections on topics such as masculinity, relationships, leadership, personal growth, mental health, faith, and human potential.
These conversations are not intended to provide simple answers. Instead, they are invitations to think more deeply, challenge assumptions, and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Growth begins when we are willing to ask better questions.
I believe we live in a culture that places too much emphasis on the idea of expertise.
The term expert is often used as though a person can arrive at a point where they possess complete knowledge or understanding of a subject. Human experience has taught me otherwise.
The more we learn, the more we discover how much remains unknown.
I do not believe any of us can truly become experts in the complexities of human behavior, identity, culture, faith, healing, or personal growth. These subjects are constantly evolving because people are constantly evolving.
What I do believe in is thought leadership. Thought leadership is not about claiming authority over others or presenting oneself as the final voice on a topic. It is about contributing ideas, fostering dialogue, asking meaningful questions, and creating frameworks that help people think differently about important issues.
My work is grounded in curiosity, humility, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Whether I am writing, teaching, counseling, conducting research, or speaking with others, my goal is not to provide all the answers. My goal is to encourage deeper understanding and more meaningful conversations.
Progress begins when we are willing to learn from one another, challenge our assumptions, and remain open to new perspectives.
